Vilafranca Saturday Market

Vilafranca del Penedès

Every Saturday morning the historic center becomes a river of stops: more than 200 stalls selling fruit, clothing, cheese and utensils maintain a medieval commercial tradition and attract residents from all over the region who take the opportunity to shop, have breakfast and enjoy the old town.

When the first bell of Santa Maria rings, carts are already invading the streets of the historic center: it is Saturday and it is market time. A medieval heritage, the Saturday Market brings together more than 200 stalls scattered throughout the Parellada, the Constitution and the Rambla. Local fruit, artisan cheeses, clothes, shoes, olives and utensils of all kinds coexist in a showcase that combines tradition and commercial dynamism.
The market keeps alive the Mediterranean model of open-air shopping and is a regional meeting point: people from neighboring villages come to get their supplies and, by the way, have breakfast of tortillas and sausages in the bars of the old town. The walk between stops allows you to contemplate modernist facades and visit centuries-old shops, so that the market and the city feed back.
Despite the emergence of large stores, the Saturday Market resists thanks to the proximity product and direct treatment. It is a weekly ritual that recalls the commercial origins of Vilafranca and that gives life to its compact urbanism.
