Built in the 19th century, at the height of funerary romanticism, the Vilafranca Municipal Cemetery is much more than a resting place: it is a true sculpture park where the memory of the Vilafranquins dialogues with marble and bronze. Part of the European Association of Significant Cemeteries (ASCE), the complex treasures pantheons and niches designed by renowned architects such as Santiago Güell, August Font and Antoni Pons.
The walk through its reticulated streets reveals aesthetics ranging from the sentimental neo-Gothic to floral modernism, with stained glass, wrought iron and mosaic that explain the evolution of Penedès funerary art. Sculptures of angels, urns, broken columns and eternal lanterns make up an authentic open-air museum where each family competed to leave their mark.
Guided tours by day and dramatised night tours, included in the municipal tourist offer, allow the interpretation of symbols, anecdotes and legends of this “heritage of the living”. The cemetery remains active, with contemporary extensions that respect the historical plot and turn the space into a place full of silence and serene beauty.
