On the western flank of the Plaza de la Vila, right next to the Town Hall, stands the Palau Macià, a stately Gothic house formerly known as the “House of the Seven Portals”. The building - ground floor, noble floor and attic - retains on the facade the semicircular arch that gives way to a surprising interior: covered courtyard with well, arcades and an elegant staircase leading to the noble floor.
The property initially belonged, in the 15th century, to Vidal de Bartomeu, ambassador of the Crown of Aragon. In 1571, her descendants were ennobled with the barony of Florejacs; later marriages included the Macià lineage and, in 1940, by female line, the Álvarez-Cuevas family, which still inhabits it. The main rooms maintain halls with murals, heraldic lintels and a library that treasures family archives.
Despite the changes in the use of the urban fabric, the palace has remained a private residence and constitutes a discreet but valuable example of Gothic civil architecture, witness to the elites who shaped modern Vilafranca.
