The most beautiful square in Catalonia, the Vila de Vilafranca square, has had a sculptural element since the end of the 20th century that pays homage to the true protagonists of the city: the castellers. The Monument to the Castellers, often a meeting point and starting point for walking pillars, is a public sculpture designed to recall the long tradition of human towers documented in the town since the 18th century.
Although municipal sources do not specify the year or the author in detail, it is known that the work was promoted by the City Council on the occasion of one of the great milestones achieved by the Castellers de Vilafranca and the Xicots. It depicts a pillar of five stylized figures, cast in patinated bronze, which takes off on a pedestal made of limestone from the country. Each figure, schematic but vigorous, conveys the collective effort and mutual trust that define the art of “pineapple making”.
During the Festivities, when leaving the office of Santa Maria, local groups raise a pillar of greeting right in front of the monument, turning the sculpture into a silent actor of a ritual that mixes devotion and civic pride. Outside the party, it is a mandatory stop on the routes that explain the Vilafranca castellera and an ideal place to take a souvenir photo. In the surroundings there are benches and trees that invite you to stop and enjoy the daily vitality of a square that, thanks to this monument, reminds everyone that the soul of the city continues to point upwards, towards the sky.
