Fountain of Sant Pau

Vilafranca del Penedès

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Font de Sant Pau takes the form of a Romanesque apse and supplies fresh water to the path that goes up the hill. A distinctive element of the landscape and an indispensable companion of the eremitic complex, it is a resting point and photography for hikers and Romeans of today.

On the southern slope of the hill of Sant Pau, at the foot of the road that leads to the hermitage, rises the Font de Sant Pau, a small construction from the beginning of the 20th century that reproduces the shape of a Romanesque apse. Built in local limestone and crowned by a perfectly cast semicircular arch, the fountain recalls the desire of the promoters to provide the project, never finished, with a new chapel with auxiliary spaces.

Despite the simplicity, the work reveals a careful work of stones and a taste for symmetry that harmonizes with the natural rock. The water, fresh all year round, was used by the ancient hermits and the Romans who went up to venerate Saint Paul. Today it is still a pleasant stop for the hiker, even more so on hot summer afternoons when the mountain is filled with the aroma of thyme and white pine.

The fountain is an inseparable part of the experience of climbing the hill: its metal spout, with inscriptions already blurred by time, and the small semicircular sink have been immortalized in hundreds of photographs of generations of Vilafranquins. Despite not being formally catalogued, its preservation depends on the civility of visitors, who are invited not to dirty or make use of soaps that can damage the environment.
