Fira del Gallo

Vilafranca del Penedès

Medieval market converted into a gastronomic festival where the Gall del Penedès is king. The weekend before Christmas, tastings, purchase of live poultry, creative cuisine and wines from the DO Penedès share the stage with festive bestiary and family activities, attracting thousands of visitors.

Before the tuna and nougat arrive, Vilafranca lights up the oven and cellar to offer a centuries-old fair that perfumes the city with aromas of roasted poultry and novice wine. Documented since the Middle Ages, the Fira del Gall brings together breeders and the public around the Penedès Gall, an indigenous breed with dark plumage and tasty meat, which has become a gastronomic icon of the region. Live specimens are exhibited in the fairgrounds, they can be bought to take home and, above all, taste them cooked in a thousand ways at the Great Exhibition of Cuisine of Aviram, always paired with wines and cavas from the DO Penedès.
The event, which takes up an entire weekend, is completed with tasting contests, cooking demonstrations, artisan products market, live music and children's activities. The presence of festive bestiary —with the Gallen Tomasot or the Gallina Ballarica as hosts of fire and feather— reminds us that, in Vilafranca, food tradition and popular culture never go separately. Today, the Fira del Gall is, together with the Festa Major, the event that attracts the most visitors, and a privileged showcase of Penedès agri-food.
That it is a living tradition can be seen in the complicity of local restaurateurs, farmers, author chefs and wineries, who take advantage of the fair to show off new recipes and vintages. All this means that many Catalans do not conceive of starting the Christmas festivities without first passing through Vilafranca to buy their rooster and toast with a good sparkling wine from the area.
