The curly escarole, the shredded cod, the tuna, the arbequins and, above all, the mortar sauce with hazelnuts, almonds and pine nuts are the protagonists of a party that claims the most characteristic dish of Penedès winters. The Xató Festival brings together in the Rambla de Sant Francesc the nine towns of the Xató Route —from Calafell to Vilanova and from Cubelles to Vilafranca— so that ognu presents its version of the recipe.
From the first hour, visitors can buy tickets to taste servings of xató and a glass of DO Penedès wine, participate in workshops to learn how to make salsa, enjoy children's activities such as “Let's go to the garden” or “Pose color to the chatón” and stir between craft stalls and giant games. The gastronomic point is thus balanced with a playful and informative aspect that aims to instill respect for local and seasonal products.
The festival is part of a wider campaign that, from December to March, promotes the Ruta del Xató throughout the country, but reaches its epicenter in Vilafranca. The sum of popular cuisine, local wine and family atmosphere makes many consider Xató Sunday the last big event before the vine sprouts.
