Cloister and Old Convent of the Trinitarians

Vilafranca del Penedès

Cloister of an old Trinitarian convent of the seventeenth century. Central courtyard with stone arches and converted outbuildings after the expropriation. Today it is a municipal facility for exhibitions, a symbol of conventual austerity and the reuse of Vilafranquí heritage.

Between the vaults of an old foundation of the Trinitarian Order remains the Cloister of the Trinitarians, a sober building that illustrates the conventual footprint in Vilafranca. Although municipal sources define it with little chronological precision, it is known that the whole was built in the seventeenth century and that, after depreciation, it was intended for a wide variety of uses - from warehouse to craft school.
The cloister, on one level, articulates the space from a central courtyard surrounded by lowered arches on living stone pillars. The old church, with a single nave, has been lost or swallowed up by subsequent renovations; on the other hand, the south wing preserves ceilings with wooden beams and some original dovetails.
Today, the City Council schedules exhibitions and workshops, and the site is part of the municipal cultural circuit. Despite the lack of remarkable sculptural decoration, the austerity of its lines offers a clear reading of convent life and the ability to recycle heritage for the community.
