Cal Gomà — Torras i Bages Library

Vilafranca del Penedès

Manor house of Gothic origin with crown windows and gallery of arches in the attic. The former family residence of Bishop Torras i Bages has housed, since 1982, the Vilafranca Public Library after a restoration that saved the medieval structure.

Cal Gomà is a Gothic manor house between half-timbered houses that presides over the site where the Plaza de l'Oli and the Plaza de Jaume I converge. Outwardly, the continuous gallery of attic windows stands out and, on Ferran Street, three 15th century crown windows. The building, linked to the figure of Bishop Josep Torras i Bages (1846-1916), was transformed into a Popular Library in 1946; a serious structural deterioration forced the relocation of the service and, after careful restoration, the Torras i Bages Library reopened its doors on September 11, 1982.
The interior combines original vaults, wooden staircases and spaces adapted to contemporary library use, turning the old house into an essential cultural node for the Centre district.
