The mountain of Sant Pau, a natural balcony on the plain, is filled with Vilafranquins who climb on foot or as a family to celebrate the Aplec in front of the troglodyte hermitage cut into the rock. The day begins with the ringing of bells and mass, continues with folk dances, collective vermouth and the possibility of visiting the enigmatic cave — the only annual day in which it is open to the public.
Administrators and volunteers keep alive this meeting that combines spirituality, nature and popular culture, remembering the devotion to the saint and the custom of going up to the hermitage to ask for rain in times of drought.
The Aplec is also an opportunity to taste baker's cake with chocolate and to enjoy one of the best views of the sea of Penedès vineyards, marking the border between winter and the future flowering of the almond tree.
