Every summer, the modernist courtyard of Can Guineu becomes an open-air oenology classroom with the Cicle de tastos des sparkling wines, which is now in its sixth edition. The program invites residents and visitors to sit under the vaults and the wrought iron chairs of the old manor house to discover, drink in hand, the richness of styles and nuances that the Penedès cava hides.
The initiative, promoted by the specialty store Cal Feru and the Cava Centre, proposes two monographic sessions: on July 9 the Xarel·lo of a single plot is explored, while on July 16 the luminosity of the rosé vintages fills the glass. The producers accompany each of the tastings and explain first-hand the winemaking decisions, the work in the vineyard and the impact of aging on the bubbles.
Despite its informative format, the cycle maintains the warmth of a neighborhood meeting: anecdotes about the recent history of cava are shared, local products are tasted and, as tradition marks, it is served with the classic “Salut i cava!”. The courtyard of Can Guineu, surrounded by sgraffito and Noucentista mouldings, reinforces the feeling of tasting liquid history in a place that has undergone all its transformations, from the overcoming of phylloxera to the internationalization of the DO Cava.
To participate it is necessary to reserve a place in advance; the capacity is limited to forty people to guarantee comfort and interaction with the speakers. The sessions begin in the evening, when the heat eases, and last until late at night, turning the activity into a pleasant prelude to the wine festivals that shake Sant Sadurní in September.
The event, despite its youth, has established itself as an essential event for winelovers and professionals who want to test their palate and, at the same time, delve into the identity story that sustains the Capital of Cava.
