The Penedès Wine Route

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Started in 1998, the Penedès Wine Route brings together more than 200 establishments and seventy wineries that offer tastings, visits, accommodation and activities among vineyards. Certified by ACEVIN, it spearheads paths and experiences so that everyone can discover the wine essence of the Alt Penedès throughout the year.

The Penedès Wine Route is probably the most suggestive thread to get into the viticultural soul of the Alt Penedès. Officially born in 1998 and managed since 2001 by the Consorci de Promoció Turística del Penedès, it was one of the first four routes certified by the Acevin within the “Rutas del Vino de España” club. Its objective is clear: to group, structure and guarantee the quality of the wine tourism offer of a region that breathes wine through all pores.

With a network that exceeds two hundred affiliated establishments and almost seventy wineries that can be visited, the Route unfolds an authentic mosaic of experiences: tastings among vineyards, author cuisine pairings, stays in centuries-old farmhouses, concerts in the fresh air, museum spaces such as the Vinseum or the Fassina and, of course, routes on foot, by bike or by 4×4 through the hills of vineyards that surround Sant Sadurní. Each member exhibits a distinctive plaque and undergoes a biennial external audit that endorses its standards of quality, sustainability and territorial authenticity.

The route is not linear but reticular: a flexible network of small rural roads, secondary roads and signposted paths that allow visitors to design their own itinerary. Thus, it is possible to combine in the same day a visit to a modernist cellar in Sant Sadurní, a lunch of local cuisine in Subirats and a sunset from one of the miravinas that dot the Sierra d'Ordal. The official website offers interactive maps, theme packs and a calendar of events that covers emblematic festivals such as Fil·loxera or Vijazz.

The Wine Route is also committed to inclusion and seasonality. Activities are programmed adapted for families, for people with reduced mobility and even for those who prefer wine tourism without alcohol, with itineraries focused on the landscape or gastronomy without pairing. Scientific wine tourism — trips guided by winemakers who delve deeper into the botany of the vineyard and the limited edition of plot wines — also have a place.

The 25 years of history have been celebrated with exclusive proposals: vertical tastings of historical vintages, picnics under the stars and intimate concerts among vines. They are ephemeral events that seek to underline the uniqueness of the territory, stimulate the local economy and, above all, make visitors feel the Penedès at home.

From a logistical point of view, the Route has homogeneous signage throughout the region and facilitates access with public transport (Rodalies R4 and R2 to Vilafranca and Sant Sadurní), private transfer services, bicycle rental and even “sleep & wine” packages that combine rural accommodation with nightly vintage experiences.

The environmental commitment is another key axis: many wineries have certified their carbon footprint, regenerative viticulture practices are promoted and the Route is actively involved in European biodiversity projects linked to the Anoia—Foix green corridor.

The Penedès Wine Route, in short, is much more than a simple tourist route; it is a collective pact to protect, explain and project to the world a cultural landscape that combines tradition, innovation and an immense sense of belonging.
