Fruit of the 30th anniversary of the devils Se m'n Refum, La Bèstia is a two-headed braw with dragon tail and wings created by the artist Dolors Sans between 2020 and 2021. It is 3.4 m long, 1.8 m wide and 2.7 m high, weighs 48 kg and has nine firing points spitting wheelbarrows synchronized with the percussion “The Rhythm of the Beast”.
The design is inspired by the martyrdom of Sant Sadurní, tied to two bulls according to legend, and thus links religious iconography with the pyrophilic imaginary of Catalan popular culture. It officially premiered on the eve of the 2021 Festa Major and, since then, it has taken part in the correfoc on 9 September (Fairs and Festivals) and on 29 November (Festa Major), accompanied by devils and tabalers.
The Beast has become an intergenerational emblem: veteran devils guard the loading technique and the young apprentices practice that firm step that moves the asphalt before the final ignition. The audience waits with cameras ready for the moment when the two heads spit sparks in opposite directions, creating an indelible arc of fire.
Out of season, the element can be visited at the Casal d'Entitats, where Dolors Sans itself teaches workshops on fiberglass modeling and pyrotechnic safety. With his appearance, Sant Sadurní reinforces the local festive bestiary and is further linked to the passion for fire that permeates all the celebrations of the calendar.
