In the heart of the industrial fabric of Sant Sadurní, in an old renovated warehouse two minutes from the station, the century-old company Simón Coll has created the Espai Xocolata: an interpretation center that invites us to delve into the aroma and history of cocoa. Although the original factory dates from 1840, the museum equipment opened its doors in 2012 adapting the old roasting room to the demands of family and informative tourism.
The building, made of exposed brick and large metal windows, maintains the workshop structure of the beginning of the 20th century. The architectural intervention has respected the riveted metal beams, the cast pillars and the hydraulic mosaic pavement, while combining them with immersive screens and exhibition elements that explain the process from bean to tile. The tour includes a small indoor garden where authentic peanut plants are exhibited under temperature and humidity control.
Unlike a classic pastry shop, the Espai Xocolata works as a showroom: visitors can see the chocolate production line live and purchase limited editions in the adjoining gourmet shop. The visit ends with a guided tasting that combines original chocolate with local cava, highlighting the dialogue between the two emblematic industries of the town.
From a heritage point of view, the facility is a testament to the industrial diversification of Sadurnines beyond the vineyard. The company Simón Coll, founded in 1840 by the Valencian entrepreneur Josep Simón, established itself in Penedès taking advantage of the abundance of charcoal and the success of the wine sector, which demanded chocolate as a high-end product. Among its historical claims stands out the figure of the modernist chocolatier painted by Ramon Casas.
Today the center receives thousands of families and schools and becomes a tourist hub complementary to cava tours, offering chocolate workshops and themed pairing sessions. Espai Xocolata is, in short, the largest pastry shop in Sant Sadurní: a place where sweetness and bubbles go hand in hand.
