Sculpture “Allegory to wine and the vine”

Just where the terms of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Subirats merge, the roundabout that welcomes visitors exhibits a monumental piece signed by the artist Cocomir (Jose Vicente Corominas, 1931). Erected between 2006 and 2008, the “Allegoria al vino i la vinya” materializes in steel and concrete the winemaking process shared by both municipalities. The set is articulated in two concrete pillars that mirror each other and support, at ten meters high, two abstract metallic shapes that evoke branches that intertwine and cups that rise to toast.
A few meters away, a complementary pedestal hosts three bronze plates. The upper ones are dedicated to the respective councils, while the lower one collects some verses from C. B. de Bencomo — “Meeting point/We walk together, like old friends,/and holding hands, we surround everything at once” —, summary of a history of friendship that comes from afar: he recalls that Sant Sadurní was segregated from Subirats in 1764 but that both villages are still united by the culture of cava and work in the vineyard.
The work responds to Corominas's line of landscape research, which since the 1960s has focused much of its production on monumental sculpture integrated into public space. In this case, the metal receives an anti-corrosion treatment that gives it toasted shades, while the concrete, with contrasting textures, acts as a solid foundation. The result is a piece that, both day and night lit, becomes a symbolic door to the Capital of Cava. Today the roundabout is a frequent photographic point and witness of the institutional events linked to the Festa de la Fil·loxera and the Cavatast.
