Rectory sundial

Located in the middle of the southern facade of the rectory, the sundial is an inseparable part of the set of Noucentista sgraffito that the architect Francesc Folguera and the painter Jaume Busquets designed between 1924 and 1927, coinciding with the reform of the parish church. The disc is a slightly sloping vertical clock — the wall does not look exactly to the south —, of bichrome sgraffito technique applied directly on the plaster. Despite its clockwork condition, the piece is eminently ornamental: there are no time lines or figures and the gnome, which points to the southwest, only performs the symbolic function of indicating the passage of time.
The composition, with rich plant and floral iconography, is crowned with two angels: the one on the left echoes a horn while the one on the right touches a sea snail, a metaphor for the dialogue between heaven and earth. The lower frieze reads the moralizing motto “I without sun/you without faith/we are worthless”, a plastic warning about the mutual dependence between nature and spirit. The text is interrupted by a five-petal flower that divides the band into two symmetrical fields, accentuating the muralist and balancing will of Noucentisme.
Since its creation, the work has been a point of attraction for scholars of gnomonics and for the curious. In 2003 the façade underwent a comprehensive restoration that restored the original chromatic vividness to the clock and ensured the survival of the sgraffito. It is currently preserved in good condition and is listed as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL). Despite being privately owned — it belongs to the Diocese of Sant Feliu — it is fully visible from the square and enjoys easy access that makes it one of the most photographed prints in the old town. The watch also has inscription 296 in the Inventory of Sundials of the Catalan Countries, reinforcing its heritage value on a national scale.
