On the outskirts of the town of Espiells, nestled amidst a mosaic of vines that change colour every season, stands the pre-Romanesque hermitage of Sant Benet, one of the most delicate heritage jewels of the Alt Penedès. Documented as early as the 10th century — when the Counts of Barcelona were pushing for the repopulation of the Penedès border — it is a rare witness of Catalan rural pre-Romanesque architecture that has come down to us practically in its entirety.
The temple has a single very compact nave, covered with a barrel vault and topped by an almost trapezoidal apse, a solution characteristic of small early medieval churches. The stones, small and irregular, were placed in rows without apparent mortar, achieving a chromatic play that mimics the clay soil of the surroundings. A small double-slit window illuminates the apse at dawn, emitting a ray of light that, according to oral tradition, marked the beginning of the agricultural day.
Throughout the centuries, the chapel belonged to the neighboring farmhouses and served as both a spiritual refuge and a community space: the first grapes were blessed, prayers were prayed for favorable winds and, according to local chronicles, peasants took refuge there during the War of the Succession. Despite these vicissitudes, the building has not undergone major transformations: only the replacement, in the 19th century, of the partition separating the nave and apse by a pointed triumphal arch and the placement of a small spade bell tower.
The last restoration, promoted by the City Council with the support of the Diputació de Barcelona, took place in 2006: the roof was consolidated, the walls were grouted with lime mortar and a simple interior lighting was installed to allow guided tours without attacking the intimate atmosphere of the place. Today the hermitage is open punctually for popular celebrations — on July 11, the feast of Saint Benedict — and for small-format concerts that use its bare and perfect acoustics.
Its merits are not lacking: in addition to an indisputable architectural value, its location offers a privileged perspective over the entire plain of the Penedès, with Montserrat pointing to the horizon; it is not surprising that at sunset, when the sun burns the vines, the small hermitage seems suspended out of time.
