Eclipsing a whole chamfer of Francesc Moragas Street, the building of the Pension Fund for Old Age and Savings (1931) is the most ambitious exhibition of institutional architecture of the interwar period in Sant Sadurní. The architect Agustí Domingo Verdaguer displayed a historicist language that brings together classical columns, pediments, simulated tiling and galleries of semicircular arches evoking Gothic palaces.
The building is articulated in three bodies with roofs on four sides: the central one houses the porched vestibule and the monumental staircase under a powerful eaves with stone brackets; on the facade, between two windows, the coat of arms of the Caixa appears sculpted in relief. On the left side there were a museum and a library, while the right housed the offices and an upper house, which was rented to the branch manager.
The building was not just a bank: in the 1950s, the institution promoted the Museum of Homenages to Old Age, because this solidarity festival was born in Sant Sadurní in 1915. The iron grilles, the vases crowning balustrades and the facade clad in artificial stone veneer reproduce the corporate pattern that La Caixa spread throughout the country.
Internally renovated in 1995, it is still in use as a financial office. Protected as BCIL (1694-I), it is a testament to the complicity between banking patronage and social progress in the capital of cava.
