Monument to Anselm Clavé

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Marble monolith with bronze bust of Anselm Clavé and bas-relief of young people and a vine. Erected in 1968 by the Agrupació Choral and the City Council, it incorporates verses by Clavé that evoke the harvest. It is a meeting point for corals and a living memory of the Catalan choral movement in Sant Sadurní.

In the shade of the bananas of the Plaça de Pau Casals, the Sant Sadurní Choral Group wanted to pay tribute to Anselm Clavé, father of the Catalan choral movement, with a monolith inaugurated in 1968. The Penesian sculptor Jaume Ventura i Sala worked on a single block of white marble, from which stands out a delicate bas-relief showing a group of young people caressing a vine, a metaphor for the fusion between popular music and wine culture that defines the town.

On one side, a bronze bust of Clavé observes the square with a serene gesture. The face, with realistic and serene lines, dialogues with the verse engraved in marble: “Already in the morning/shines in the sky/the white star...”, the beginning of one of his most beloved songs that invites him to go out to harvest. The text, chiseled with classical typography, recalls Clavé's social ideal: to elevate the people through collective singing.

For more than half a century, the monument has been a meeting point for choirs and musical entities that, on the day of Santa Cecilia or during the Choral Spring, deposit flowers and sing their compositions. Accessible at any time, the monolith has been kept in good condition thanks to the noble stone and municipal maintenance, and remains a symbolic reference that links the capital of cava with its choral tradition.
