Between 1993 and 1999, the Festa de la Filloxera saw the birth, one per year, of seven giants that pay tribute to the winegrowers and prohomos who led the technical fight against the parasite: Rafael and Marc Mir, Manuel Raventós, Francisco Romeu, Pere Rovira, Modest Casanovas and Antoni Escayola. The sculptor Montse Mateu, with the collaboration of Mercè Gost and Mercè Beneit, modeled the faces in the purest realistic style.
At 2.5 m in height and up to 30 kg in weight, each giant is carried by a single bearer who, to the beat of a specific melody, executes slow twists and bows symbolizing the search for remedies and peasant hope. During the final act, they form a scroll that encircles the large Phylloxera to show the scientific encirclement of the problem.
Regularly exhibited at the Cava Centre, they have become a key piece of the collective imagination of the Sadurnines. On Saturday mornings, many children take pictures and learn, with QR codes, who were those seven wise men who saved the vineyard.
