Freixenet Cellars

In the shadow of the railway station, the Freixenet Caves have been displaying, since 1927, a set of buildings signed by the architect Josep Ros i Ros that combines Noucentista language with modernist brushstrokes. The central reception body, erected during the 1929 expansion, surprises with the undulating frieze of glazed ceramic with motifs of pompoms and grapes that frame the name of the company, flanked by two towers of medieval reminiscence that function as symbolic doors to the “temple of the cava”.

The five production buildings, arranged perpendicularly to the track line, have a structure of concrete pillars and metal cornice roofs, an early example of the American technique that Ros incorporated into the Penedès. Inside, the large parabolic windows guarantee ventilation and the play of lights that still amazes visitors today.

Founded in 1889 by the union of two producer families, Freixenet became a pioneer in the international diffusion of cava thanks to its advertising campaigns and products such as Carta Nevada or Cordon Negro. The underground galleries, dug more than 12 meters, maintain the ideal temperature and humidity for the traditional method.

The company offers experiential tours with immersive audiovisual, specialized tastings and gourmet shop. In addition, it participates in the Wine in Moderation network and has routes adapted to people with reduced mobility, an example of how the industrial heritage of Sadurnines knows how to reinvent itself without losing its essence.
