Fountain of the Monistrol ravine

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

To the west of Monistrol d'Anoia, the Font del Raval splashes all year round under the shade of oaks, a banana tree and cane. The current spout, witness to exsurgent changes, offers non-potable water but maintains a cool and green corner that the neighbors take advantage of for recreation and pause.

Located on the western slope of the small town of Monistrol d'Anoia, the Font del Raval de Monistrol is a humble but stubborn nook that splits all year round. The visitor can easily reach it by following a flat path; just to the right, among the tessellation of vineyards and terraces, a cool corner emerges where oaks, a ripe banana tree, reeds, ash trees, asbarges and some spontaneous oak gather creating a generous shadow.
The current spout is a metal spout recessed into the earthy margin wall. The surrounding stones preserve small cracks that reveal ancient points of emergence: the ten moved several times and the neighbors were channeling the water to make it more convenient to collect. Today the water is not drinkable; however, the persistence of the jet keeps the environment green and is a watering point for birds and small mammals.
Documented by Manel Córdova in his 1999 inventory, the fountain is part of the everyday landscape of the Monistroleans. For decades it was a compulsory stop for schoolchildren on their way home, and even now walkers pause before climbing into the nearby groves.
It has no legal protections or tourist infrastructure — the land is privately owned — but the Sadurninense consistory considers it a recreational area of natural interest. The maintenance tasks are minimal and are limited to clearing the gray matter when it invades the passage and to checking that the mouth is not clogged with foliage.
The value of the Font del Raval is not so much hydrological as landscape: it is a green oasis embedded in the middle of an agricultural mosaic dominated by the vineyard. The two oak trees that guard it — one of them more than a metre in diameter — have seen phylloxera, the industrialisation of cava and the conversion of old orchards into recreational gardens. His mouth, modest but constant, sums up the essence of these dry lands: every sip of groundwater is a small miracle to be preserved.
