Chapel of the old hospital

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Old Gothic chapel linked to the medieval hospital for the poor. It retains a conopial cover and shield, despite changes of use (school, warehouse). Restored in 2002, it is visible from Carrer de l'Hospital as a reminder of the old Sadurninian care system.

Hidden among the compact houses on Hospital Street is the small chapel of the old poor hospital, a late Gothic construction linked to the parish assistance network. Despite the successive reforms, it retains the moulded conopial arch doorway, two blinded ogival windows and the characteristic shield of the brotherhood engraved on the key. The interior, of a nave with a hinged roof, was compartmentalized in the 19th century when the building became a school for girls and, later, as a municipal warehouse.

The municipal sources highlight the restoration of the facade and the recovery of the shield in 2002, which highlighted this humble but full of collective memory: here the population was cared for during the plague crises, soup was distributed to the day laborers and wounded soldiers were sheltered. Even today the neighborhood knows it as “l'hospitalet” and some cultural entities organize occasional talks there.

Although the complex is not freely accessible, the pedestrian can contemplate from the street this discreet testimony of the charitable system of modern times and discover, on the information panels, the mark it has left on the local toponymy.
