The liveliest corner of Carrer del Raval has been presided over, since 1904, by the delicate Casa Maria Sàbat, also known as Casa Rigol by the name of the first owner, the wine merchant Francesc Rigol i Tubella. The building, an early work of the Barcelona architect Miquel Madurell i Rius (named municipal architect of the town in 1891 and since 1904), represents a modernist manifesto where curve and color direct the gaze.
The site, located at a turning point in the urban layout, determined a single-row floor plan with two facades at right angles. Madurell solved the corner with a polychrome pinnacle that, like a lighthouse, tops the compositional axis and announces the plasticity of the facade. On the ground floor there are two portals with arched arches, intended for trade, framed by mouldings and ornate imposts.
On the first floor, a balcony run with stone slab and iron vegetable railing visually unifies the two fronts. The access doors, framed by moldings that continue to the second floor, accentuate the verticality. This upper level takes the form of a window sill balcony with three windows and profuse relief decoration. The winding repertoire of railings, moldings and reliefs under the windows, together with the fuchsia plaster and green brushstrokes, give the building a festive character that breaks with the traditional sobriety of the street.
The house was protected in 2010 as BCIL 1682-I (POUM file 11) and is inventoried under IPAC code 2857. It maintains private residential use and preserves, despite some interior transformations, the original carpentry and the exterior color range, faithfully restored.
Madurell, who left his mark on the Escoles Noves and the Ateneu, saw in this order an opportunity to experiment with a very particular modernism, close to the Barcelona solutions but adapted to the scale of a wine village. The corner became an advertising appeal for the Rigol family, which simultaneously consolidated the anisate business and opened the door to the future production of cava.
Today, when the afternoon sun falls on the intonated fuchsia, the street is filled with reflections reminiscent of the jet of rosé wine; and the floral pinnacle, proud, continues to serve as a meeting point for neighbors and visitors.
