Can Mas de la Riera

Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Can Mas de la Riera, an old farmhouse from the 19th century transformed into a municipal cultural space, combines traditional architecture - vaulted arch, uneven roofs, central courtyard - with rehearsal rooms and music classrooms. Renovated by school-workshop since 1980, it is today a meeting point for organizations and outdoor concerts.

On the outskirts of Sant Sadurní, in the middle of the fields that descend towards the Lavernó stream, stands Can Mas de la Riera, a quadrangular farmhouse that the municipality has transformed into a multipurpose cultural space. The main building, plastered and painted, has a two-water roof with uneven slopes that take advantage of the natural unevenness of the terrain. The midday façade shows a neat grid of openings, while the eastern one combines, on the ground floor, a main door with asymmetrical windows and, on the upper floor, symmetrical openings. The corner with stones arranged in a chain and the attached portal, solved with a flat brick arch and a small protective roof, stand out.
To the west side, over the years, auxiliary volumes of masonry and single-pitched roofs enclosing a large interior courtyard were attached to it. This square, presided over by the old portal paved with stone branches, is today the axis of circulation between the various rehearsal rooms and music training rooms that house the site. The plaster presents various textures and chromatisms, testimony to the reforms promoted by the Municipal Workshop School from 1980.
Historically, the estate was privately owned until May 1981, when the heirs transferred it to the City Council as part of the development of a partial plan. The consistory opened several workshop schools that rehabilitated roofs, forges and facades, with the initial objective of converting it into a house of colonies. In 2000, coinciding with the construction of the new municipal pavilion, the local government responded to the request of the music groups transferred from the old Balmes School and adapted the rooms for rehearsals.
Today Can Mas de la Riera is a facility open to organizations and artists: it combines modern music, choirs, technical training and small exhibitions linked to popular culture. The central courtyard, simply landscaped, hosts summer concerts, while the attached bodies serve as an instrument warehouse and house a small collection of local ethnographic objects.
Visitors can immerse themselves in an atmosphere where the peasant tradition of the farmhouse coexists with the creative vitality of the young musicians of Sadurnin. The variety of spaces, from the old cellars transformed into test vessels to the upper rooms with small capacity, make the whole a sound laboratory with its own personality.
