Cal Solà

Located in the eighteenth century Eixample, Cal Solà exemplifies the permeability of modernism to small homes and local menestralia. Built in 1909 — date that appears in the circular top — it is a single-storey house with ground floor and floor that plays with color and curve to stand out in a street of rather simple houses.
The facade is covered with a stucco that imitates broken tiles. The large commercial portal on the ground floor — with two side accesses and a central showcase in differentiated planes — is framed within a pink moulding with rounded edges, a preamble to the sinuous language that dominates the height. Above, an undulating slab balcony and domed wrought iron railing, where helical bars and floral motifs form a real filigree, marks the axis of the first floor.
Framing doors and windows we find classic moldings enriched with purely modernist plant ornamentation; everything culminates in the circular capcer that, in addition to the date, rises above the level of the roof to two Arab tile waters. The interior, now private, had combined commerce on the ground floor and residence on the floor, a common scheme in the new commercial streets of the town.
The house does not enjoy any specific protection, but the IPAC includes it with number 2861 and the City Council considers it part of the everyday modernist heritage. Despite the absence of visitors, its good condition and the beauty of the balcony make it an obligatory stop for fans who travel the route of Sadurninense modernism.
Cal Solà recalls that, at the beginning of the 20th century, modernism was also a popular phenomenon: a local trowel and blacksmith could, with taste and craft, endow a small façade with an unmistakable character that still warms the hearts of those who walk along Sant Antoni Street today.
