Cal Calixtus

Cal Calixtus, built in 1885 by the Barcelona master builder Narcís Aran Vidal, is one of the most seductive facades of Carrer Diputació, the first road of the Eixample railway. The estate embraces house and garden enclosed by a bastion of pillars and a cast iron grate, a prelude to an eclectic universe with well-dosed modernist touches.

The ground floor, floor and roof building fits into the corner with a perimeter gallery supported by iron columns reminiscent of colonial galleries. The metal corner was later closed with a spectacular polychrome stained glass window with sinuous lines and plant motifs, a true jewel that connects with the modernist sensibility. At the top emerges a turret-viewpoint covered by a vault covered with glazed ceramic scales that glow in the sun.

The walls combine the padding of the ground floor with classic pilasters, triangular pediments and moulded cornices. On the edge of the entrance stands out the commercial name of one of the first sparkling wines made in the town, “Calixtus”, a reminder of the link between the building and the Cavaire family Oliver, who acquired it in 1917 to establish his signature.

Despite being a private residence, the facade has been listed as BCIL (1669-I) and is included in the urban route that the Tourist Office facilitates for visitors interested in modernism. At night, the lighting follows the stained glass window, turning the corner into a luminous beacon of the historic center.
